Reimagining research

The Bose Fellows Program, named in honor of MIT Professor Amar G. Bose, supports audacious research projects dreamed up by MIT faculty members who take “it can't be done” as an invitation. The Program needed a visual identity and website that celebrated the unconventional nature of the research projects that makes the Program possible.

Identity won Award of Excellence, Communication Arts Design Annual, 2018. Website won Silver, W3 Awards, 2018.

DESIGNED WHILE AT MOTH DESIGN—under the instruction of tammy dayton and erin zwaska. WEBSITE IN COLLABORATION WITH LEAH FENTON.

“What happens, even in mathematics, is if you want to go from here to there, you stumble around, you go all over the map, and eventually, you come to the result.”

insatiable curiosity

Deeply inspired by countless videos of Dr. Bose and his legacy, the identity felt best represented as a dynamic, animated object with multiple configurations to reflect the creative processes of scientific research and convey the spirit of a Program that supports nonlinear discovery.

INSPIRED EXPLORATION

The website showcases the vast array of research projects while simultaneously conveying and celebrating the essence of the Program and Dr. Bose’s legacy. The site is full of subtle discoveries—from the split screen animation to inset videos.

Dr. Bose believed that passion lies at the heart of scientific breakthroughs—and that the pathway to new understanding and true innovation lies in exploring what fascinates us.
